Awwww. This little piggy loves his Winnie and Piglet! Today, author A.A. Milne's birthday is celebrated as Winnie the Pooh Day. But Winnie the Pooh wasn't always called Winnie, nor Pooh! Initially, he went by the name of Edward Bear in Milne's original stories for his son Christopher Robin, only to be changed prior to the official 1926 book publication. The "Winnie" part of the name came from a visit to the London Zoo, where Milne saw a black bear who had been named after the city of Winnipeg, Canada! The Pooh part of Winnie's name comes from the first of the Pooh stories, When We Were Very Young, from a poem, telling how the storybook Christopher Robin would feed the local swan in the mornings. In the story, Christopher Robin had given the swan the name "Pooh," explaining that “this is a very fine name for a swan, because if you call him and he doesn’t come (which is a thing swans are good at), then you can pretend that you were just saying ‘Pooh!’ to show him how little you wanted him." #wheekwheekforwinnie
