The sandwich has a much longer history than its name. People have been wrapping or piling food in bread for thousands of years, but the sandwich as we know it took its name from John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, in 18th-century England.

According to the famous story, the Earl was so absorbed in a card game that he asked for meat tucked between slices of bread so he could eat without leaving the table—or getting his fingers greasy. Other diners supposedly began ordering “the same as Sandwich,” and the name stuck.

One suspects that your own sandwich may be a few veggies short as the lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots all seem to have disappeared into some hungry mouths!
