Aniello Ascione

(1680-1708)

Aniello Ascione (1680-1708) was one of the protagonists of the baroque still life in Naples, after Michelangelo's testimony of Campidoglio and Spadino in Rome. A pupil of Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo, he imitated the most striking examples and involved in the wave of Jordanism present in Neapolitan painting of the late seventeenth century. Several works are known, even of considerable size, signed with the intertwined monogram "AA" and depicting large fruit compositions arranged scenically and rendered with intensely decorative colors.
